What a mobile Airstream does for a brand

Mytheresa used an Airstream to reach top clients, Nina Berenato to test a new city, Toni Garrn to tour a charity market. What it did for its owners, and what it couldn't.

A polished Airstream trailer with white-and-yellow striped livery, its side opened to show a Mytheresa-branded counter and clothing racks, with two armchairs, a white side table with flowers and a striped rug set out in front.

For just over five weeks in the summer of 2026, Mytheresa's best customers in the Hamptons could book a fitting room that came to them. A customized Airstream, towed by a Rivian R1T pickup, moved between The Hedges Inn, Topping Rose House, Wölffer Estate Vineyard and the Montauk Yacht Club. Tuesdays and Wednesdays were reserved for private appointments with top clients. Thursdays were open to everyone else.

Years before she had a flagship, the Austin jewelry designer Nina Berenato was selling from a renovated 1959 Airstream Bambi parked in a food-truck park. Her company still calls it its first retail store.

One is an online luxury retailer that carries up to 250 brands. The other had built her business on wholesale, with her line in more than 200 shops across the U.S. and Canada. Neither needed the trailer for transport. Each needed something a website or a wholesale account could not give it: a room of its own, in front of the right people. Across a handful of owners, the same object did a few specific jobs for them, and it was poor at others.

The shape does the announcing

Most temporary retail has to explain itself. A tent or a white box needs signage before anyone knows what it is. An Airstream's curved, riveted outline tells passersby that something is happening before they can read the logo. Owners use that in different ways, and the paint often matters less than the silhouette.

At Lollapalooza Berlin in 2025, Crocs built its festival presence around the "Crocs Fit Stop," a bright green Airstream with an open front in the festival's fashion area. Visitors registered on the spot, received a free pair of Classic Clogs and could personalize them at a built-in Jibbitz bar. The agency that produced the activation says more than 600 people were in line at times and that it counted more than 1,000 direct contacts a day. Those are the agency's own figures. The green paint did not hide the shape.

For Toni Garrn, the model who has run the charity resale project Super Flea Market since 2015, the trailer gave a market that moves between cities something to carry its name. In 2026 a converted Airstream boutique toured Berlin, Cannes, Stuttgart and Hamburg, towed by a Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric. Its racks held pieces from the wardrobes of Paris Hilton, Leonardo DiCaprio, Stefanie Giesinger and Joko Winterscheidt. Proceeds go to the Toni Garrn Foundation, which supports education for girls in Africa, and to organizations including Re:wild and All Hands and Hearts. Porsche donated for every kilometer the tour drove, the Stuttgarter Zeitung reported. A polished trailer behind a new electric SUV is an easy image for a sponsor, so the road trip became the sponsorship.

Heritage brands use the reference too. During Coachella in 2016, Levi's and the model Suki Waterhouse hosted a party in an Airstream at the Avalon Hotel & Bungalows in Palm Springs, where guests were offered private fittings and customization of trucker jackets and 501s, Hypebeast reported. For a brand founded in San Francisco in 1853, the trailer was a piece of Americana it did not have to explain.

It goes where the customers already are

The second job is reach, and Mytheresa shows it most clearly. In the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2026, its top customers were 4.8 percent of its customers but drove 48.4 percent of its gross merchandise value, according to its parent company's results release. When half the business comes from about one customer in twenty, it is worth going to that customer in person.

A storefront in East Hampton would have picked one village. The trailer went to hotels, a vineyard and a yacht club, and the launch release promised beaches, wineries, restaurants and cultural destinations as well. These are places where Mytheresa's clients already spend the summer, and each venue lent the visit some of its own polish. "Mytheresa Out East brings our world directly to the Hamptons," Carly Rosenberg, the company's President of North America, said in the release. We covered the full run in our story on Mytheresa Out East.

For Berenato, reach meant testing places before signing anything. She found the Bambi in Gruene, Texas, did pop-ups around Austin and parked it in a popular food-truck park, she told Voyage Houston. CultureMap Austin later described her Airstream boutique as part of a female-owned mobile shop collective at The Picnic on Barton Springs. On July 5, 2017, the same trailer opened as her first San Antonio storefront, at 2202 Broadway St., CultureMap San Antonio reported. The trailer let her try out a new city without a lease. Her path from trailer to flagship is in our profile of Nina Berenato.

Super Flea Market used reach differently. Before 2026 it had appeared in Paris, London and New York, according to Porsche. The trailer let one tour cover four cities in a single run.

What it costs in commitment

An Airstream can be owned for years or used for a weekend. The owners who kept theirs show both the payoff and the risk.

AETHER, the outdoor apparel brand, says its first physical retail space was the AETHERstream, a custom-built Airstream that served as a roving shop before the brand opened its first brick-and-mortar store in 2013. It spent more than a decade on the road, the company says, crisscrossing the country from major cities to small mountain towns. In 2024 it was in a collision and declared a total loss. AETHER did not drop the idea. It went through a design and fabrication process of more than a year, stripped a new Airstream to its shell and rebuilt it with oak veneer and hardwood, stainless steel hang bars and a hatch roughly 12 feet long that raises and lowers electronically. After that long on the road, the trailer was part of the brand's identity, and the brand chose to replace it.

Vitra, the furniture company, treats its trailer as a fixture. Its campus in Weil am Rhein, Germany, includes a 20-foot Airstream Globetrotter from 1968 that was found in Nevada and has belonged to Vitra since its restoration in 2011. In summer it works as a take-away restaurant. Vitra lists it among the architecture on its campus, alongside its buildings.

Owning also means deciding when to stop. Berenato's company no longer lists the Airstream among its locations and has not said publicly what became of it.

Renting is the other model. The company that supplied the Crocs trailer lists the Lollapalooza job as a rental project. That gives a brand the icon for a festival weekend with no storage, insurance or plan for the trailer's next use. Mytheresa and Super Flea Market have not said whether they bought or rented their trailers. Mytheresa's ran on dates set in advance, from June 30 to August 6, so there was no lease to get out of when the season ended.

What it can't do

A trailer is small, and every owner here worked within that. Mytheresa's trailer could hold only a small edit, a sliver of what it sells online. Its job was fit and contact. The website handled range.

It also does not replace a store. Berenato kept the Airstream running alongside a temporary shop and then a permanent one. When she opened her Dallas store, she told the trade magazine JCK that "brick-and-mortar is a way bigger part of our business than online." Today her company lists stores in Austin and Dallas and a bracelet-bar pop-up in Houston.

It does not prove much on its own, either. Mytheresa has not published results for Out East, and its launch release gave no performance targets or forecasts, as Netty noted. Crocs' line numbers come from the agency that ran the activation.

The owners who got the most from the trailer gave it one narrow job: private appointments for top clients, a trial run in a new city, a line at one festival. Each also had something larger behind it, whether a website, a flagship store or a foundation. The trailer drew people in, and the rest of the business made the sale or kept the customer.
